Simple Salisbury steak recipe
I admit — I love Salisbury steak, and I think I found the perfect recipe. Add mashed potatoes and a veggie, and you have perfect comfort food! (And I will admit, I used boxed potatoes and a canned green beans, but, hey, that makes it feel like the school cafeteria (and I’m pooped tonight).
But look — a simple Salisbury steak recipe for 4 (and economical/pantry friendly, too!):
Salisbury Steak
Ingredients:
1 packet onion soup mix
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup dry bread crumbs
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon minced garlic or dash garlic powder
1 10.5 ounce can of mushroom soup
2 cups of water
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 8 ounce package of sliced, fresh mushrooms
Directions:
1. Mix packet of onion soup with 2 cups of water. Add Worcestershire sauce. Heat till hot. Set aside.
2. Mix egg in mixing bowl. Add ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic, bread crumbs and 1/3 cup of onion soup mixture. Form into 6 patties. Spray cooking spray in 8X11 dish.
3. Heat large skillet on medium high heat. Place 3 patties in pan, and sear for 2 minutes on each side. Continue with the other 3 other patties. Place all in 8X11 dish, and preheat oven to 350 degrees.
4. Saute mushrooms over medium heat till brown but still firm in 1 Tbs. butter or butter cooking spray (about 5 minutes).
5. In remaining onion soup, add one can of mushroom soup undiluted. Mix. Whisk in 2 Tbs. of flour till smooth.
6. Place drained mushroom on top of patties, and pour gravy over.
7. Bake in 350 degree oven for 45 minutes. Serve gravy over mashed potatoes.

This does sound good. I forgot about salisbury steak. DH won’t eat mushrooms. Unless they’ve been minced into a casserole. This an adaptable recipe, though! Hmmmm.

Like I said, it’s easy just to nix the mushrooms on top (though I love ‘em). I think you could sub in some sauteed onions instead. That would be good. I got a second, “Boy, this is good,” today when we had the leftovers for lunch.

Mmm I love mushrooms.
Have you ever tried those steam in the bag vegetables? I love them. I quit buying canned all together.

Funny enough, I just had a coupon for the Green Giant ones (got ‘em for 50 cents). I bought the mixed veggies, because it comes in handy when you are doing a chicken casserole and such. Worked like a dream last week when I made the Chicken and Biscuits recipe I have posted here.

Oh that is great news! Farmers Wife does similar but just totally cook ‘em in the frying pan and then pours the gravy on top. Just as good.
